General Info

Tucked away at Alawa Fish & Chips (Take Away & Restaurant), this local spot delivers exactly what you’d hope for from a classic fish & chips restaurant-simple food, satisfying portions, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe. From the moment you step in, it feels like the kind of place where comfort food takes center stage and the menu keeps things straightforward yet appealing.

The highlight here is clearly the whiting with chips. The fish is light and flaky, coated in a crisp batter that doesn’t feel greasy, while the chips come out hot and perfectly golden. It’s the sort of meal that hits the spot whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for something more filling. If you’re in the mood for variety, the serve of chips on its own is generous enough to share, though you might not want to. And for those who prefer something beyond seafood, the inclusion of lamb chicken options adds a nice twist to the menu, giving diners a bit more choice without overcomplicating things.

What stands out just as much as the food is how easy the whole experience feels. The restaurant caters well to different needs, offering lunch service that’s quick and convenient, especially if you’re on the go. At the same time, it’s also a comfortable place to sit down, thanks to its laid-back setting. Families will appreciate that it’s good for kids, complete with a kids’ menu that makes ordering simple for younger diners.

On the practical side, the restaurant ticks all the right boxes. It accepts reservations, which is helpful if you’re planning ahead, and credit cards are accepted, making payment hassle-free. These small details make a difference, especially when you’re looking for a reliable local dining option.

Looking at reviews and overall impressions, it’s clear that this location has built a reputation for consistency. The menu stays true to what a fish & chips restaurant should be, while the service keeps things smooth and friendly. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Alawa, this spot offers a dependable, no-fuss dining experience that’s easy to come back to again and again.

What customers say?

“ Good place, visited earlier this afternoon for the first time to get some fish and chips. Price was reasonable, taste good, glad to have a chat with Anthony. Very friendly guy, loves chatting to customers, friendly attitude. Overall I’m satisfied. Have been seeing the sign for the last couple of years, didn’t get chance to visit. Bought fish and chips with chicken nuggets- my children loved them. Will definitely go back again soon. All the best Anthony :) ”

“ I ordered barramundi fish and chips today. The shop wasn't crowded so I was served quickly with freshly-fried food. The front staff even gave me a bottle of sparking water for free. It was a lovely experience. Highly recommended! Cons: the view was normal. There were only 3 small tables for waiting and quickly eating. ”

“ The place ain't much to look at but the food was good, I got some Barra which they crumbed fresh and the cup of calamari and chips which was a decent size.. they didn't have a few items on the menu at the time I was there like scollops and wedges but the lady was very friendly explaining this to me. ”

“ Probably my favourite Fish & Chips in Darwin I don't come here very often but everytime I get food here it's good real good Battered Salmon and Potato Cakes yum The place is run by Indians so you can also get Currys etc But I'll stick to Fish & Chips ”

“ If you are a connoisseur of old style fish and chip shops with a late 70s early 80s decor, then Alawa Fish & Chips is your kind of place. I had the fish which was snapper and chips. It was fine, but the batter was not fully cooked through. It needed a couple of more minutes in the deep fryer. Price was cheap for Darwin however. Good for the budget conscious. Will try again. ”

“ I had the best service from this shop tonight as the order was meant to be picked up by menu log at 630pm and at 815pm still no response from menu log the shop ended up delivering the meal for us So a big thank you to the shop and man that delivered the meal sorry I didn’t get your name But heartfelt thanks ”

“ I was actually amazed by the fish. Crumbed Barra and flake were fresh and great. Chips well cooked and good serving size. $5 chips is more than enough for 2 people. I was disappointed however that the calamari rings are formed and also the service was a bit gruff. No acknowledgement of your presence until you literally stand in front of them. Will be back. ”

“ Great burgers and wonderful fish and chips. As traditionally a chippy as they get. Almost all business is take-away, and that is fine. Family owned and consistently good food and good value. My current favourite fish and chips. ”
